Real Weddings: Erica and Tony

I first met Erica (briefly) when she was a bridesmaid in her friend Shauna’s wedding. When we met for coffee two years later to talk about flowers for her own wedding, I knew we would hit it off. Erica has a great style and a wonderful eye for color. Her colors were shades of pink, bright green, turquoise and white. Her style was English Garden/Jane Eyre/Alice in Wonderland (with a dark side). Loved it! Our job was to translate this into bouquets and centerpieces that she and Tony would love.

Erica and the girls carried bouquets filled with tulips, ranunculus, hellebores, viburnum and piers japonica. Tony and the guys wore succulent and rosemary boutonnieres.

While the wedding was at the beautiful Carnegie Institute in DC, the wedding party chose some super creative DC spots for their photos!

Erica and Tony collected milk glass and depression era glass that we used in small collections on each of the reception tables. The varieties of blues, greens and whites looked awesome with the brightly colored flowers.

Real Weddings: Meredith and Scott

Meredith booked her wedding with me over the phone.  We talked for about an hour about her wedding which would take place at Woodend Sanctuary.  I was immediately excited because I love working at Woodend. It’s just a beautiful, natural sp0t-perfect for a summer wedding.  I also loved hearing about how she and Scott spent a lot of time at Woodend bird watching! I loved it!

The wedding colors were shades of pink, a little purple and bright green. For the end of July, we had a great selection of pinks including zinnias, lisianthus, Echinacea, coxcomb, plume celosia, dahlias and phlox. We included green zinnias and mountain mint for a splash of green.

I especially love this sweetheart table. The colors were so vibrant in this mostly green setting.

The two larger arrangements in this photo were used out in the grove for the ceremony and then were moved inside to decorate the mantle. Reusing your ceremony arrangements a the reception is a great way to get the most out of your flowers.

Thanks to our growers including Bridge Farm Nursery, Belvedere Farm Locust Point Flowers and Talmar.

Special thanks to the amazing Jocelyn Mathewes of Studio Mathewes for taking such amazing pictures! She captured the beauty of the couple and the space perfectly. To see more photos from Meredith and Scott’s wedding check out Jocelyn’s blog!

Congratulations to this happy, happy couple!

Real Weddings: Andrew and Alyssa

I have to say-I LOVED everything about this wedding! Alyssa and Andrew were such a great couple to work with. I met  Alyssa back in the winter when she was on a short break between trips. Alyssa is a professional musician for the US Army Field Band. She was super easy going, had a few ideas for colors and style for her flowers-but was happy to give us creative freedom to make something lovely.

The flowers in mid June were just beautiful. The bride’s bouquet was filled with dahlias, yarrow, gooseneck loosestrife, mountain mint, feverfew, campanula and a couple late blooming peonies.

Gertrudes and the BMA were a perfect venue for the summer, garden wedding.  Working there is always a joy.

As a vegetarian and lover of animals, I was especially excited about two special details of Andrew and Alyssa’s wedding. The first was a small card on each table that said: “In Celebration of our love of all creatures great and small, a donation in lieu of wedding favors has been made the Washington Animal Rescue League in honor of all the guests".”

IMG_0958 The second, was the opportunity to decorate a gorgeous vegan cake from my favorite vegan bakery Sticky Fingers! Kambor from Sticky Fingers and I decorated the cake with dahlias, mini sunflowers and some pretty yellow and pink yarrow. I think it turned out great!

Real Weddings: Nathalie and Cory

Nathalie and Cory are both artists who were interested in having a Green/DIY wedding. With a great eye for color and texture, Nathalie shared with us her vision for her bouquets. Mostly green with some splashes of yellow, purple and white; succulents; herbs; very textured and natural.

For the bouquets we used yellow gerbera daisies, white and purple stock, iris', hens and chicks, rosemary and lavender.
The table arrangements were in vintage mason jars on top of wood slices cut by Cory's dad.We used the same flowers, herbs and succulents in the mason jars as in the bouquet with the addition of yellow lilies and hosta leaves.

The wedding took place on a hot, sunny Sunday afternoon in April at the beautiful Woodend Sanctuary. The photographer, Jocelyn Mathewes of Studio Mathewes perfectly captured the love and natural beauty that surrounded this couple on their special day. Check out Jocelyn's blog to see some more pictures and video of the happy couple.
