Real Weddings: Sandi and Jason

Sandi and Jason’s wedding in historic Ellicott City at Ellicott City Weddings and Events was a joy to work on!  Sandi was inspired by her many years living in California to create a retro/modern wedding. The colors were mellow yellows, melon, deep/bright pink and green.

The bride carried a bouquet filled with white lisianthus, white dahlias, white zinnias, orange dahlias, pink coxcomb and scented geranium.SC080

The highlight of the day for us was definitely building the “flower curtain”. Inspired by a photo in Martha Stewart Living, the bride wanted a flower curtain as the back drop to the ceremony.  We’re always excited to try something new-and the flower curtain was a great project.

The flower curtain was complemented by small, hanging mason jars on the ceremony chairs. The mason jars doubled as reception centerpieces once the ceremony was over. The jars were filled with zinnias, calla lilies, raspberry gomphrena, asclepias and mountain mint.

SC235Many thanks to Locust Point Flowers, Plant Masters and Belvedere Farm for the beautiful flowers (and the flower curtain advice).  Thanks too to Sarah Culver Photography for these beautiful photos! To see more photos from Sandi and Jason’s special day, check out our flickr site.

Congratulations to Sandi and Jason. Wishing them all the happiness in the world.

Crazy, Busy, (FUN) Week!

This was a seriously, busy week for LoCoFlo! We started the week with a trip to Silver Spring to meet one of our fave flower growers, Bob Wollam of Wollam Gardens. We picked up close to 600 dahlias from him a wide range of stunning colors.

On Tuesday, we made and donated centerpieces for the Martha’s Place 11th Anniversary Fundraiser. Martha’s Place is an amazing non-profit in West Baltimore providing affordable housing and recovery services for women overcoming drug and alcohol addiction. The work they are doing is changing lives and we are so proud to support them.

I also made a trip down to Fairfax Virginia on Tuesday to see my friend Sebastian become a US citizen. What an inspiring, beautiful day! (and yes…those are red, white and bluish flowers!)

On Thursday, we made centerpieces for a celebration of community farmers hosted by Johns Hopkins Center for A Livable Future as well as for a rehearsal dinner at the Admiral Fell Inn.

On Friday we headed out to Kent Island for a rainy, but joyful wedding. We had to re-purpose many of the flowers inside since much of what we planned for was outside. The Garden House at Kent Manor Inn was filled with sweet smelling flowers and herbs!

On Saturday, we provided flowers for beautiful weddings in Baltimore, DC and Clear Spring, Maryland.

The flowers for today’s wedding at Gramercy Mansion were some of my favorites of the weekend (because in case you didn’t know…i love the color orange!)

Our last delivery of the day…(before football!) was to Apothecary Wellness. If you have not been to this amazing spa, you should definitely check it out-great owners and staff, incredible treatments and…local flowers!

“You Deserve A Bouquet Today” August Winner: Miss Jenny

When I came up with the idea for the Local Color Flowers “You Deserve A Bouquet Today” contest, I had winners like Miss Jenny in mind. Miss Jenny was nominated for the contest by one of her neighbors. The nomination read:

"Miss Jenny" has been taking care of her husband, Mr. Ed, for decades. He is wheel-chair bound and recently had a stroke and some other medical complications. Miss Jenny collects all the UPS and Fed ex packages for the block and always knows what's going on. Would be great to give her this bouquet!”

It was a great write up-heartfelt, sincere and sweet. It wasn’t until voting started that I realized how much Miss Jenny’s neighbors really loved her-she got over 1000 votes on the first day!

After voting ended, Miss Jenny was the clear winner! Her neighbors  excitedly wrote to me saying

“ If there is one thing I want to emphasize, it's that our whole block came together to vote for Miss Jenny (and some people who live on nearby streets) to win the flowers. We all truly appreciate and care about her very much and wanted her to win these beautiful flowers.”

Check out the video of our delivery! It was AWESOME!

Miss Jenny was truly surprised and excited! She invited us in and told us as one of the older homeowners on the block, she enjoyed looking out for her younger neighbors. Miss Jenny’s husband Mr. Ed was excited too! He let me know that he thought it was great that Miss Jenny won and thought she definitely deserved to win the flowers.

Presenting this beautiful bouquet of flowers to Miss Jenny on behalf of her neighbors and on behalf of Local Color Flowers was a truly joyful moment for me.  I’m grateful to own a business that can make people happy!

If you have a nominee for this month’s You Deserve A Bouquet Contest, submit your write up on our website.  You too could be a winner!

Real Weddings: Kristin and Laura

It was a real joy for Local Color Flowers to be a part of Kristin and Laura’s wedding. This beautiful couple was married in the garden at the American Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore on a beautiful Spring night.

Kristin carried a bouquet filled white anemones, peonies and ranunculus with a splash of green from the leaves of the Solomon’s seal.

All of the arrangements were simple and elegant and fit perfectly with this couple and the venue.

Thanks to Wollam Gardens, Lynn Vale Studio and Farmhouse Flowers for these beautiful flowers. Thanks to the amazing Kelly Prizel of Kelly Prizel Photography for sharing these awesome photos with us.

Special thanks to Kristin and Laura for choosing Local Color Flowers to be part of their most special day. When Kelly sent me the photos these two were definitely my favorites. I rarely get to go to weddings that we provide the flowers for, but these photos made me feel like I was there. What wonderfully captured moments! Congratulation to Kristin and Laura. Wishing you much love and happiness in the years to come!  http://www.kellyprizel.com/ http://www.kellyprizel.com/

Real Weddings: Heather and Matt

I first met Heather several months after she booked her wedding with us. We met at a Starbucks in DC near the Penn Quarter farmer’s market where I was picking up flowers. I knew right away that Heather was a bride that loved flowers. She was so  excited to talk about the color, style and look of the flowers. I always love meeting with clients that love flowers like I love flowers.

Heather and Matt were married on a beautiful, late Spring afternoon at Thorpewood in Thurmont, Maryland. If you haven’t been to Thorpewood-you should go. It is a a beautiful, natural setting for a wedding.  Everything about it has a cool, eco friendly vibe.

The bride carried a bouquet filled with peonies, ranunculus, bachelor buttons and vibrant green Solomon’s seal. The bouquet was wrapped simply in naturally colored raffia.DAT_20110507-326 Being a flower lover, Heather wanted to wear flowers in her hair. I brought a variety of flowers over to her hair dresser (an awesome guy sporting a kilt) for her to choose from. Heather later told me that she wore as many flowers in her hair as she could. One perfect white ranunculus was complemented by a cascade of lily of the valley and sweet smelling freesia. (there were cool, blue bachelor buttons on the other side too!)
